Nicaragua- Costa Rica

                    BUS RIVAS-PEÑAS BLANCAS  Después de unos días en la isla de Ometepe, volví a Rivas y cogí el autobús directo a la frontera con Costa Rica (Peñas Blancas). Por cierto, en el suroeste de Nicaragua hay varios enclaves playeros que están muy bien. El más famoso y visitado es San Juan del Sur, pero no lejos de él te puedes encontrar con otros igual de bonitos y no tan masificados.

After few days in Ometepe island, I went back to Rivas and took a direct bus to the Costa Rica border (Peñas Blancas). By the way, in the southwest of Nicaragua there are several beach enclaves. The most famous and visited is San Juan del Sur, but not very far from it there are other as nice as it and not so overcrowed.

La carretera transcurre paralela al lago. Casi una hora de trayecto, en un autobús abarrotado de gente. Y con un tal reverendo Héctor Ramón Benavides amenizandonos el viaje a voz en grito con un sermón interminable.

The roads goes along the lake shore. Almost one hour trip in a crowed bus. And with the Reverend Héctor Ramón Benavides entertaining the trip with a never-ending sermon.

Un euro= 30 córdobas.

Después de un buen rato conseguí averiguar que, para salir de Nicaragua, tienes que hacer los trámites en el control de entrada. Una frontera poco confusa.

After a while, I found out you must go to office of entry to leave Nicaragua. Very confused border.

Para entrar en Costa Rica es necesario poseer un billete para salir del país. Puedes comprarlo justo enfrente de la oficina. Siempre hay gente dispuesta a ayudarte, por una "bendición"...

To enter Costa Rica is necessary have a ticket to get out the country. It's possible to buy it just in front of the office. There are people willing to help you everywhere for a tip...

TAMARINDO (Costa Rica)

Aunque mi intención era ir directo a la capital, San José, en la frontera me convencieron para ir a Tamarindo. Un pueblo situado en la costa del Pacífico.

My intention was go directly to San José, the capital. But in the border I was conviced of going yo Tamarindo, a village on the Pacific coast. 

Las playas aquí son espectaculares. 

Beaches here are amazing.

Es un destino 100% turístico. Similar a las zonas de playa de España. Y hace muchísimo calor.

Touristic 109%. Similar to beach areas in Spain. And very very hot.

Mucha gente viene a hacer surfing.

Lot of people come here for surfing.

EL CANAL DE NICARAGUA

Una ruta alternativa para cruzar a Costa Rica es hacerlo por el este: llegar a San Carlos, recorrer el río San Juan y cruzar la frontera. Me hablaron de un ferry que cruza el lago Nicaragua un par de veces por semana, desde Granada a San Carlos, pasando por Ometepe y viceversa. 

Pues bien, resulta que el ferry lleva suspendido varios meses debido al bajo nivel del agua en el lago. Mi gozo en un pozo (descarté las otras dos opciones: viajar en autobús desde Managua o en avión desde Ometepe).

El gobierno nicaragüense ha proyectado un canal que atraviesa el país (como el de Panamá), de costa a costa, pasando por el lago Nicaragua. La solución que ha dado al bajo nivel del agua es drenar el fondo del lago 30 metros, algo que no convence a la gente de la isla: ¿dónde llevarán toda la tierra que se extraiga?, ¿cómo afectará este drenaje y el tráfico de barcos al lago en sí y a la calidad del agua?, etc.

An alternative route to go to Costa Rica is the East: arrive in San Carlos, know San Juan river and cross the border. I was talked about a ferry that crosses the lake from Granada to San Carlos, stopping in Ometepe, and vice versa, twice a week.

When I arrived at Granada, I discovered the ferry is indefinitely cancelled due to low water level of lake. There are other two opcion to travel: from the island by plane or from Managua by bus, but I excluded both of them.

The Nicaraguan gobernment has planned to build a channel (similar to Panama's) , coast to coast, passing through the lake Nicaragua. The solution to the low level of water is to drain 30 meters on the bottom of the lake. Well, people here are not very happy with the proyect: what will they do with all the drained soil?, what will happen with the lake and the quality of water after the drainage and with the traffic of boats?, etc.
